Purpose

Create a compelling, tailored "Tell me about yourself" answer that makes a strong first impression and sets the tone for your entire interview. This skill helps you craft a structured response using the Present-Past-Future framework that connects your background to the specific role you're pursuing.

When to Use

Use this Skill when you need to:

  • Prepare for the most common interview opening question
  • Create different versions for different roles or industries
  • Strengthen your professional introduction
  • Build an elevator pitch for networking
  • Practice articulating your career narrative
  • Tailor your story to a specific company or role
  • Update your introduction after a career change or new achievement

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Understand the Target Role

Clarify what role and company the introduction is for.

Ask guiding questions:

  • "What role are you interviewing for? (title and company if known)"
  • "What industry or type of company is this?"
  • "What do you know about what they're looking for?"
  • "What aspects of your background do you think are most relevant?"
  • "Is there anything specific you want to emphasize or downplay?"

Output Variable: target_role

Step 2: Capture Your Present

Document where the user is now professionally.

Ask guiding questions:

  • "What is your current role and company?"
  • "What are your main responsibilities?"
  • "What's a recent accomplishment you're proud of?"
  • "What skills do you use most in your current role?"
  • "How long have you been in this position?"

Present Section Guidelines:

  • Start with current title and company
  • Include 1-2 key responsibilities
  • Mention one concrete accomplishment if possible
  • Keep to 30% of total answer

Output Variable: present_info

Step 3: Capture Your Past

Document the relevant professional journey.

Ask guiding questions:

  • "How did you get to your current role?"
  • "What previous roles or experiences are most relevant to this opportunity?"
  • "What's the thread that connects your career choices?"
  • "Any education, certifications, or training worth mentioning?"
  • "What experiences shaped your professional interests?"

Past Section Guidelines:

  • Focus on experiences relevant to target role
  • Show intentional career progression
  • Connect past experiences to skills needed
  • Keep to 40% of total answer

Output Variable: past_info Context Used: target_role

Step 4: Define Your Future

Articulate why this role is the logical next step.

Ask guiding questions:

  • "Why are you interested in this specific role?"
  • "What excites you about this company or opportunity?"
  • "How does this fit into your career goals?"
  • "What do you hope to learn or accomplish in this role?"
  • "Why is now the right time for this transition?"

Future Section Guidelines:

  • Connect your background to this specific role
  • Show genuine enthusiasm and research
  • Avoid generic statements ("looking for growth")
  • Keep to 30% of total answer

Output Variable: future_info Context Used: target_role, present_info, past_info

Step 5: Craft the Answer

Generate a polished, interview-ready response.

Create three versions:

Version 1: Full (90 seconds) Complete Present-Past-Future narrative with details

Version 2: Standard (60 seconds) Streamlined version hitting key points

Version 3: Brief (30 seconds) Elevator pitch version for quick introductions

Each version should:

  • Have a strong opening line (hook)
  • Flow naturally from present to past to future
  • End with clear connection to the target role
  • Feel conversational, not scripted
  • Be tailored to the specific opportunity

Output Variable: drafted_answers Context Used: All previous steps

Step 6: Generate Answer Document

Create a comprehensive document with all versions and practice notes.

Create a document titled "Tell Me About Yourself - [Target Role]" with:

Role Context:

  • Target Role: [Role]
  • Company: [Company]
  • Key Requirements: [What they're looking for]
